good morning! here’s the latest mashup of the week selection from my pal DJ paul v. – i love M.I.A.‘s track ‘paper planes’ but usually when it’s played on the radio the gunshots are edited out – which is probably a good idea – songs with bullet noises and/or police sirens when you’re driving can be a little stressful! this mashup adds in a ‘rump’ factor which works out quite nicely – have a listen below for yourself! popbytes over & out for now…xoxo (oh and congrats to M.I.A. who recently confirmed her pregnancy!)

I’m always really happy when a song or artist unexpectedly finds themselves on the Top 40 charts. Any confluence of atypical events can cause this: song usage in a TV commercial, an appearance on an awards show, or Oprah giving her thumbs up. This year’s biggest surprise was seeing M.I.A. – one of my favorite new artists – hit the jackpot because her song was used in the Pineapple Express movie ads. Hipsters already knew how much they loved ‘Paper Planes’ – but now we’re talkin’ mass appeal. And as with a lot of her best tracks, she liberally borrows chunks of melodies or lyrics from other tracks. In this case, it was Wrecks-N-Effect‘s 1993 jam ‘Rump Shaker’ that inspired its chorus. Thus, New York DJ Alan Astor connects the past to the present in one shiny, bouncy, new package.
