Benedict Cumberbatch = Doctor Strange & Ryan Reynolds = Deadpool

In casting news that isn’t really news because this has been plastered all over the web for a while now, two Marvel characters have officially been cast. The first being Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, who despite being the most obvious choice hasn’t been confirmed until now. Via A/V Club:

Marvel has officially confirmed that famous British guy Benedict Cumberbatch—best known for appearing in every casting rumor ever—will be playing Doctor Stephen Strange in the upcoming Scott Derrickson-directed Doctor Strange movie. Cumberbatch was all but officially attached to Doctor Strange back in October, when we reported that a number of sites had declared that he would be playing the magic physician.

The other half of this story is that Ryan Reynolds will be playing the role of Deadpool, which shouldn’t be too surprising since he played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And then again in that test footage that exploded the web earlier this year. So actually anyone could have seen that one coming.

Ryan Reynolds is officially playing Deadpool again in Fox’s attempt to do right by the character that it pretty much got completely wrong in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. We correctly assumed that Reynolds would be reprising his role as Deadpool back in September, based solely on the fact that Reynolds constantly talks about playing Deadpool and also he did his voice in that animated test footage that got everyone hyped up about Deadpool getting a movie in the first place.

Granted, these aren’t terribly shocking, since we’ve been talking about them for weeks, if not months by now. But credit where credit is due, those are some pretty stellar casting choices, so we really have nothing to complain about. Unless the movies are bad, in which case the net will have a friggin’ field day with that one. Hell, they still haven’t stopped complaining about Green Lantern, and that came out years ago. So no pressure.
