So now that the dust has settled and no one’s really sure who exactly the hell originally came up with the idea of dressing up in a mermaid costume and wheeling themselves around in a wheelchair, it seems like Lady Gaga and Bette Midler have buried the hatchet, and the two are now sister mermaids.
“I had no idea that she did that and I’m a huge Bette Midler fan,” Gaga told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush for The Billy Bush Show on Monday. When Billy asked Gaga if her routine was meant to be a tribute to Bette, the singer said it wasn’t originally, as she had no knowledge of the legend’s act, but she’s glad they have something in common. “Not in the beginning it wasn’t ‘cause I didn’t know that she’d done [it], but I do now and I think it’s great,” Gaga said. “Obviously I feel connected to women in theater and women from the past. What surprises me most is that, as a reader pointed out yesterday, the mermaid in a wheelchair bit was performed even before Bette or Gaga. Seriously, is this a thing now? How does someone even put mermaids and wheelchairs together? Did they watch The Little Mermaid and think “Yeah, under the sea, that’s great … I just think this would be better if Ariel was driving around in a mobility scooter.”
