As a kid, we all want to be older and more mature. When we get older and more mature, everything is a reminder of our own mortality and it scares us. That’s why I think Buzz Aldrin is a hot bitch; he breaks convention and inspires all ages. I want to be like that dude when I’m 80 (fit and fabulous — although I also aspire to be quite the dirty old man!)
As we age, staying healthy becomes about making the active choice. In my forthcoming book, Better by 30, I detail daily mental mottos that lead to an improved being. One of these simple rules is: Healthy People Take The Stairs. Pepaw Buzz provides a literal example of that mindset.
“Well, I certainly haven’t been working out the way that I did when I was in the astronaut business,” he tells That’sFit.com. “There are 23 flights of stairs to the helicopter pad on top of building where I live, so I climb those … My wife is also very health-conscious about our diet. We avoid sugar and stick to fruits, green vegetables and proteins. And I do love epsom salt tub baths from time to time.”
The moon man continues to challenge himself in life. He took up skiing when he was about 50, and he’s currently on Dancing with the Stars.
As I said a couple weeks ago, dancing is great fitness!
“As we mature, I really feel it’s necessary to keep the mind active and to have a couple of things going on at the same time,” Buzz says of training for the show. “I can already say I’ve noticed that my brain seems quicker and more in-control at organizing thoughts. I also may need to put some new holes in my belt — my pants are getting a little big.”
He’s currently working on an iPhone application to help people learn about science, technology and space travel.
Buzz is a fitness hero today because keeps his mind and body active in the here and now.
