Have you seen the Lady Dior commercials starring Marion Cotillard? The word “commercial” doesn’t do them justice since they’re expensive short films. In the new short (number three of four) a blue Dior bag haunts the Oscar-winning beauty. The commercial was directed by weirdo genius David Lynch (of Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks fame). He sends Cotillard wandering through spooky hotels and running through Shanghai at night until she finally succumbs to the beautiful glowing handbag.
The short film as commercial got really popular about nine years back when Clive Owen starred as the “driver” for eight BMW films collectively known as The Hire. I’ll never forget the one he made with Madonna, called The Star. Have you ever seen that? It’s screamingly funny whether you love or hate Madonna … and Lord knows there are both types of people in the world.
The “Lady Dior” commercials may be great for Marion Cotillard’s career (money + glamour = actress heaven) but not all movie stars should be shilling product. Many celebrities wisely opt for foreign-only deals when they sign on. Long running campaigns can be so annoying. Does anyone want to see Catherine Zeta-Jones again after those endless T-Mobile commercials? ‘Shut up already about the phones, CZJ! We’ve got iPhones now … we’re not switching to T-Mobile!’
But the trend continues. Are you sick of Ellen Page after her Cisco commercials? Let’s hope not. She’s got some interesting films coming up.
