Last week, I worried about the possibility that Emma Watson would star in the very likely terrible film adaptation of the Fifty Shades of Grey books. Except it turns out those rumors are untrue and we can all breathe easier now that we know she won’t being starring in any of the films. Via E! Online …
Don’t look for Emma Watson in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey flick. The Harry Potter star made it clear she’s not interested in headlining the sexy adapted film, in spite of reports she was cast in the lead role. “Who here actually thinks I would do Fifty Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life,” Watson tweeted. “Good. Well that’s sorted then.”
Actually, there’s one thing I want to clear up: Last week, I got an email from someone who took umbrage with my saying that the Fifty Shades of Grey books were poorly written and a woefully inept representation of kink, with their defence basically being summed up as “Well, look how many people read it, and if something’s popular, it must be good.” To which I say: No. Millions of people can read a crappy book. It is entirely possible for millions of people to like something terrible. Look at how many people follow Kim Kardashian on Twitter. Look how many people think wearing shoes with individual toes is a good idea. Just because a lot of people do something, doesn’t make it a good idea. Likewise, just because a lot of people read a poorly written book that glorifies an abusive relationship that completely misrepresents the kink community, doesn’t mean it’s a good book.
