Good news everyone! Darren Young, one of the WWE superstars (gosh I hope I’m using that term correctly) came out in an interview with TMZ last night, which officially makes him the first openly gay wrestler in the league. Woohoo! Progress!
Darren was at LAX Wednesday when we asked whether a gay wrestler could succeed in WWE, and Darren laughed, saying, “Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.” For the record, Darren is now the first openly gay wrestler ever at WWE … and the first headlining wrestler ever to come out while still signed to a major promotion.
To be honest, the news has been just SO depressing the past few weeks to the point where I literally just want to close my laptop and take a day where I just don’t communicate with the outside world at all. (I’m looking at you, Russia.) So I’m happy that we made some progress, and it wasn’t even some huge pre-planned move. Dude just said who he was and walked on, and everyone was cool with it. It’s the little things like this that you kind of have to string together, otherwise you end up drowning in all the misery that goes on everywhere else.
