The summer box office continues to offer fairly typical fair, this week with the release of Friends With Benefits and yet another superhero film, Captain America: The First Avenger. Friends with Benefits pairs Mila Kunis, in a comedic turn after the overtly dramatic Black Swan, and Justin Timberlake, in yet another film role, which leaves one to question when is he getting back in the studio? The film battles the somewhat modern concept of the aptly titled film, but revealing that sexual relationships aren’t always uncomplicated. Though it’s a rather unimagined story in the world of romantic comedies, the chemistry between the cast is critically heralded, one critic even going so far as to say that pairing makes the film!
Captain America is a blockbuster entry into the comic book turned film cannon, showing that superheros aren’t as washed up as one might think. The campy action packed retro throwback is making waves out of what could have been a disaster, the star-studded cast, stellar action, and good acting isn’t going unnoticed. I might point out though, how could you go wrong with the likes of Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Haylee Atwell, Dominic Cooper and Stanley Tucci?
Looking for something off the beaten path? Sarah’s Key, a tense and well made expose about the haunting 1942 Vel d’Hiv Roundup, or, A Little Help, which explores one woman’s journey after her husband unexpectedly dies, may be more up to speed.
