If you’ve been on the internet, or if you’ve so much as been anywhere near someone who has internet access, chances are you’ve probably already been inundated with news about how Ben Affleck has been cast as the new Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, so consider this both a refresher as well as an opportunity to dump more nerd rage into the comment section. Via HuffPo …
Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in Warner Bros. upcoming sequel to Man of Steel. The film, from director Zack Snyder, will arrive in theaters on July 17, 2015. “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes (sic), and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some,” Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production for Warner Bros., said in a statement posted to the Warner Bros. Facebook page. “His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
Now before you immediately jump into the comments section to talk about how this is a terrible casting choice, let’s just remember a few things here …
- Daredevil was a bad movie on the whole. Ben Affleck didn’t ruin it; the collaborative effort of everyone involved did. Don’t single out Affleck for a terrible screenplay and bad editing.
- Ben Affleck has kinda redeemed himself for the early oughts with Argo and The Town. Not sure if you saw those, but they were decidedly awesome and it helped to re-validate Affleck’s credibility.
- Remember when they announced Heath Ledger as the Joker and everyone threw a hissy fit over that one? And then he turned out to be the best Joker ever? (Get over it, he was. Mark Hamill is a close second, but don’t kid yourself here.) I’m not saying Affleck’s gonna do to Batman what Ledger did for the Joker, but at least wait for a trailer or some promotional shots before you start wailing and gnashing your teeth.
