hey gang! i’m sure you must all be a little over me talking about this film but a scanner darkly finally opens in select cities tomorrow! it’s been such a fun ride covering it from a screening a few months ago to the LA premiere last week! i’ve been reading the famous 1977 philip k dick novel (i know – me reading a book?!? crazy!) on which the film is based – this smart & slick adaptation is very faithful to the original material which is one awesomely twisted and prophetic mind fucker of tale! the material is quite heavy stuff (yet there are great bits of humor) but it also proves to be a fascinating cinematic trip that forces you to really pay attention…which is actually easy to do since the film looks absolutely stunning – you have to see it for these ‘scramble suits’ that the future undercover police wear!
done in this ‘painted over’ interpolated rotoscoping technique (a term i won’t soon forget) that stylish director richard linklater employed to bring this haunting tale of drug addiction, government surveillance, conspiracy, and paranoia to a hauntingly surreal level of ‘reality’ that works so well in combination with the dick’s work! plus the ensemble cast is top-notch led by keanu reeves and marks the much anticipated return of winona ryder (additionally it features music from radiohead) without giving too much away let’s just say by the end of the film – i thought that i needed to watch it again…keeping in mind the second time around how it all ends up! so make sure to bring your thinking caps to the theaters and in the meantime check out a few clips from the film below! popbytes over & out until tomorrow…xxoo!
