Rye Rye’s ‘Never Will Be Mine’ video featuring Robyn!

Don’t know who Baltimore rapper Rye Rye is? Me neither. But the up and coming hip-hoptress has a new single out (and an album out later this year) that features a sample of Swedish pop sensation Robyn‘s acoustic piano version of Be Mine! (which, by the way, is easily the most depressing song to ever require an exclamation mark in its name) and honestly? It’s not bad at all. Mostly because it has Robyn in it and let’s face it, Robyn has never made a bad song. Honestly, think of a single Robyn song that was objectively bad. You can’t. Also, the video features Robyn walking around in crazy colorful clothes, so YAY to that!

Championed by tastemakers like BBC DJ Gilles Peterson and respected producer Diplo, Baltimore rapper Rye Rye arrived in 2008 with an effervescent style and some support from M.I.A. She was only 17 when a rap left on DJ Blaqstarr’s answering machine turned into a partnership. Blaqstarr introduced her to the Mad Decent label/studio/family and soon she would land on a remix of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” plus the Diplo track “Wassup Wassup.” Next, she signed with M.I.A.’s imprint N.E.E.T. and released her first solo track, “Shake It to the Ground.” By the end of 2008, she appeared on a remix of electro producer Adrian Lux’s track “Strawberry” plus the Count & Sinden single “Hardcore Girls.” She kicked off 2009 by appearing on the Fast & Furious soundtrack with the song “Bang.” Tours with M.I.A. and Die Antwoord followed in 2010, along with a video for a new single, titled “Sunshine.” Aided by producers Blaqstarr, Diplo, Count & Sinden, and M.I.A., Rye Rye’s long-awaited debut, Go! Pop! Bang!, was finished by the end of the year and scheduled to be released later in 2011.

Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ – the video!

Swedish pop sensation and one of PopBytes’ favorites, Robyn has finally released the music video for her kick-ass single, Call Your Girlfriend, from the third installment of Body Talk and once again, Robyn’s dancing on her own. I mean yes, the video is pretty killer, and Robyn is an adorable dancer and she wears a fuzzy sweater that makes her look like a puppy, but come on, it can’t be that hard to find someone to dance with. Hell, I once convinced a drunk person to try and screw a squirrel. He died of rabies. Point is, you can make people do whatever you want after knocking back a couple beers, so why not dry hump a guy with nice pecs and beer breath?

Robyn always gets mistaken for a lesbian!

So Swedish pop sensation Robyn is in the new issue of Out magazine (alongside the beautiful and talented Adele) where spoke openly about her somewhat androgynous look, and how she still gets mistaken for a lesbian because of her hair. No worries sweetie! Everyone thinks Justin Bieber is a lesbian too, and she’s still pretty popular here in the states.

“I get mistaken for a lesbian all the time — but I guess I do have the most lesbian haircut of any of the girls in my field,” she laughs, referring to her signature blonde bowl cut.

[...] Having that experience where I was confronted by people’s reactions to what I looked like or what I was supposed to look like made me identify with queerness. It still happens to me all the time, and a lot of the time it happens to me in America because even though what I consider butch is still very feminine in Europe, here you can shock people very easily just by looking a little queer.” SOURCE

The weird thing is, Robyn actually is very feminine (aside from the hair) and the only people who think she’s butch are the people who’ve never actually meant a lesbian. “A Lebanese? Yeah, my co-workers daughter was Lebanese … I think. How does that work anyway? Do they just adopt them from wherever Wonder Woman’s from? Because I love Wonder Woman … although I’d never let her get married here because my pastor says gays make baby Jesus cry Mountain Dew tears all over the Nascar track.”

Did Robyn just diss Katy Perry?

By now you’ve probably heard that Robyn is going to be touring with Katy Perry (and if you happen to be gay, chances are you just shat fabulous, rainbow bricks. I know I have!) In an interview with Time Out New York, the subject of what she thought of her soon-to-be touring buddy came up, at which point Robyn jumped ship faster than you can say “Stupid fucking cupcake bra”.

You’re opening for Katy Perry this summer—how did that happen?
I was asked by her to do it and thought it was a good way of getting to know her audience. It’s bigger than mine. [Laughs]

And are you a fan of hers?
You know what? I have to go now. [Giggles]

Really?
Yeah! I do. But it’s nice to talk to you. SOURCE

Before anyone gets any funny ideas, she HAD to leave. Specifically because if she contemplated for a second the fact that she’s opening for Katy Perry, she’d probably spend the rest of her day crying in the shower. Seriously people, what the eff? Making Robyn open for Katy is like serving someone a steak then following it up with Kraft Dinner. Not that they aren’t both good in their own ways, but they just don’t work together.
