Lady Gaga to NME: I’m not a Madonna rip-off!

Yes, Lady Gaga has heard all the rumors about she’s a rip-off of Madonna, back before Madge turned into that weird, gristly, veiny-armed harpy-witch she is today. And now Gaga’s clearing the air in her new interview with NME magazine, stating that she’s not just a rip-off of Madonna and that her songs just happen to have the same chord progression as some of Madonna’s work, so they just have a similar structure. You know, sort of like how every romantic comedy shares the same structure, or how every James Patterson novel has the same basic foundation as a frozen dog turd.

In a new interview with NME, the popstar has hit out against those saying her smash hit Born This Way is a ripoff of Madonna’s Express Yourself. “That’s retarded,” she said about the accusations, “If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I’m the first f**king artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn’t mean I’m a plagiarist, it means I’m f**king smart. Sorry.” SOURCE

You know what? I’ll let her slip. At this point, all songs share the same basic skeleton when you think about it, and yes, every once in a while two songs are going to sound alike. Although I’d probably respect Gaga a lot more if she just came right out and said a lot of her look and performances are based on prior acts. Let’s face it, it’s what she does: She takes forgotten bits of pop cultures and retools them into something new. Granted, it’s not the most innovative way of creating art, but pop culture is cannibalistic in nature, so you really can’t fault her for going with the crowd on this one.

Lady Gaga - NME Magazine

And as an added bonus, here’s Weird Al Yankovic‘s Born This Way parody, which I’m including here because I thought it was kinda spiffy, but certainly not interesting enough to warrant its own post. Apparently, neither did Lady Gaga. Sorry Al!

Madonna ditches Kabbalah for Opus Dei?

Queen of Pop, and ‘Material Girl’ clothing mastermind Madonna seems to have given up her faith in the mysterious religion Kabbalah for something much more traditional. Apparently Madge is ditching her trendier denomination (along with her red string bracelet) after a falling out with the upper echelon within the Kabbalah organization over a dispute dealing with the collapse of her school in Malawi. She’s chosen instead, Opus Dei, an extremely dedicated sect within Catholicism. Opus Dei (made famous in The Da Vinci Code) is shrouded in almost as much myth as Kabbalah, it was founded in 1928 in Spain and a literal translation of the title means “God’s Work”, not necessarily something Madonna is known for, despite the name, quite the contrary. Throughout her career the pop diva has been known for her controversial take on gender roles, sex and particularly religion. An interesting choice, but perhaps like many aging stars, this is just a return to her roots, having been born and raised a Catholic.

For the past 15 years, she has been Kabbalah’s most high profile and dedicated follower. But now Madonna has apparently ditched the controversial faith and taken up with Opus Dei – the secretive Catholic sect made famous in The Da Vinci Code. The singer is said to be intrigued by the organisation and spent Friday with priests from the centre’s London HQ. The move follows her alleged falling out with some Kabbalah leaders after reports that cash raised for her Malawi charity was squandered. Last night a source claimed: “She has invested so much into Kabbalah so she was devastated by these damning accusations. She has started exploring different religions. Madonna has always been intrigued by Opus Dei. As yet, she’s not a fully paid-up member – she’s just had informal chats.” SOURCE

Vintage Madonna covers OUT magazine!

Madonna - OUT Magazine

OUT magazine today released its second of two dual April 2011 covers featuring another of the “Ladies We Love,” Madonna. The beautiful Madonna print spread features never-before-published photographs snapped by Richard Corman, along with an additional 18 images posted exclusively to out.com. Corman reflects on the day he shot these images back in 1982 and the amazing woman he met as a result of a recommendation by his mother, Cis Corman, who had just had Madonna test read for a role in The Last Temptation of Christ.

When Corman arrived at Madonna’s Alphabet City apartment nearly two decades ago, he was struck at how the neighborhood children flocked to the fledgling star. “They followed her, they danced with her, they sang with her. It was something they did on a daily basis, and it was remarkable,” Corman remembers. He continues, “She was so alive and unpretentious. She was fierce, determined. Nothing was going to stop her.”

The “Ladies We Love” is dedicated to the women who inspire, scandalize, educate, and excite us. In addition to Madonna and Britney Spears, whose was released on last Wednesday, the “Ladies We Love” issue celebrates Wendy Williams, Tippi Hedren, Heather Morris, Phyllis Diller, Stockard Channing, and others. Log on to out.com now for more never-before-seen Madonna photos.

Madonna approves of Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’!

So in case you missed the entire day’s worth of Twitter feuding over whether or not Born This Way was a rip-off of Express Yourself and whether Lady Gaga or Madonna was the better artist, well you can all make with a ceasefire: Gaga told Jay Leno (ugh) yesterday that Madge’s people sent her an email saying they approve completely of her new song. Problem solved?

“There is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me,” Gaga responded. “I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.” The pop superstar went on to reveal that she received communication from her Madgesty, and that she’s OK with the song. “Well, the good news is that I got an e-mail from her people and her, sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single and if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be,” Gaga told Jay. SOURCE

This is what I absolutely fucking hate about fandom: It’s pretty much about spending 10% of your time actually enjoying the things you like, and then spending the other 90% of your time sobbing on the internet arguing that the thing you like is better than everyone else. For fuck’s sake, I just want to like the things I like and not spend and entire day having a bitchfit because someone dared piss on my golden cow.

Prince and Madonna are BFFs again!

Good news for those of you who just can’t let go of the 80′s no matter how hard you try: Madonna and Prince have come out of irrelevancy to end their feud once and for all! Yay! Apparently, these two have been fighting for something like twenty years, but made up after realizing that they both look vaguely like gargoyles and drink the blood of virgins to stay youthful.

The Material Girl, 52, was among the celebrities cheering on Prince’s sold-out Tuesday show at NYC’s Madison Square Garden. (Other A-listers in attendance: Jimmy Fallon, Donald and Melania Trump and an awestruck Leighton Meester, whom Prince serenaded onstage.) During the show, an attendee reports that Prince, also 52, made a good-natured joke about the high price of Madonna’s concert tickets. “I know I’m expensive!” he joshed, then making a friendly call-out to Madonna by name. SOURCE

Yay! Now the two of them can be tired and overrated … TOGETHER! This is the best day of my life! Wait, did I say “the best”? I actually meant “just another”. Yes, I get it: Purple Rain was an awesome album. I don’t care, Prince is still a colossal jag and Madonna is just irritating.

Madonna speaks out about bullying!

Make sure to tune into The Ellen Show tomorrow (Nov. 9th), Madonna is making an appearance (via satellite) to talk with Ellen Degeneres about bullying! Being gay and out in high school, I personally didn’t experience a lot of bullying (thank heavens) but I know that’s not the norm for many teenagers out there today, so raising awareness and creating dialogue is very important, especially in light of all the recent teen suicides. xo

Madonna on why she chose to speak out about bullying…

Ellen: I appreciate that you wanted to speak to this cause here because it is a very
important cause to me and I understand for you. So speak to us.

Madonna: Well, I just feel it would be incredible remiss of me to not say something.
I’m incredibly disturbed and saddened by the overwhelming number of teen suicides
that have been reported lately because of bullying. Suicide in general is
disturbing. Teenagers committing suicide is extremely disturbing but to hear that
teenagers are taking their lives because they are being bullied in schools and
dormitories, what have you, is kind of unfathomable. I know a number of people have
spoken out about it but I feel like I need to say something. The gay community has
been incredibly supportive of me. I wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for the gay
community…I have a teenage daughter and I have ongoing discussions with her about
this topic so I feel like I need to say a few words…

Madonna on being bullied as a kid…

Ellen: Were you bullied as a kid? Did you feel different than other people when
you were younger?

Madonna: Yes, that’s an understatement. I still feel different. I can totally
relate to the idea of feeling isolated and alienated. I was incredibly lonely as a
child, as a teenager. I have to say I never felt like I fit in in school. I wasn’t
a jock. I wasn’t an intellectual. There was no group that I felt a part of. I
just felt like a weirdo…It wasn’t until my ballet teacher who was also gay took me
under his wing and introduced me to a community of artists of other unique
individuals who told me it was good and okay to be different and brought me to my
first gay disco and ironically made me feel I was part of the world and it was okay
to be different.

Madonna on how she talks to her kids about bullying…

Ellen: What do you say to your children, Madonna? You said you started having these
conversations when you talk about bullying. What do you say?

Madonna:..We talk a lot about the importance of not judging people who are
different. Not judging people who don’t fit into our expected view of what’s cool
and what isn’t. Think about it across the board. The concept that we are torturing
teenagers because they are gay. It’s kind of like I said earlier. It’s
unfathomable. It’s like lynching black people or Hitler exterminating Jews. Sorry
if I’m going on a rampage right now but this is America. The land of the free and
the home of the brave….

Madonna on a solution to bullying…and when she will be back in the recording
studio…

Madonna: I think it would be interesting for everybody to try one simple experiment.
If you want to talk about solutions or how can we solve this problem? Try to get
through the day each and everyone of us…without gossiping about somebody. Without
gossiping about anybody. And not only that. Not even listening to gossip. Walking
away from it. Can you imagine what your day would be like? How much more free time
you’d have? I also feel like you’d feel about better about yourself…

Ellen: I think it’s a good challenge. Just thinking that there is somebody on the
other end of that….Madonna, I think you’re an amazing woman and before I let you
go, when are we going to hear another album? We’re waiting for another album.

Madonna: Ellen, never let me go.

Ellen: I know you are finishing up a film right now…

Madonna: I’m editing it (her film) and as soon as I’m done. I’ve got to get my butt
in the studio and make some more music.

Ellen: We can’t wait.
