Zachary Quinto comes out as a gay man!

I just got back from Mayer Hawthorne‘s fabulous show down at The Roxy (my favorite LA venue) and I came home to this totally delicious bit of gossip concerning super hottie Zachary Quinto. Apparently the actor (probably best know for his role on NBC’s series Heroes and playing Spock in 2009′s Star Trek reboot) has come out of the closet, declaring he’s gay in a brand new interview featured in the latest issue of New York magazine! If this is indeed true, then kudos to Zachary (who in the past was romantically linked to Rumer Willis and Hayden Panettiere) for his bravery in declaring himself a proud gay man in Hollywood, not necessarily the easiest thing to do these days. Especially for actors and actresses who unfortunately still need to consider what coming out might mean to their careers. Yet there’s always strength in numbers, which definitely helps others who might be struggling with the same issue.

Zachary Quinto, best known for starring on the NBC show Heroes and playing Spock in the Star Trek remake, has come out of the closet in the upcoming issue of New York magazine, according to one of its editors. Mark Harris, an editor at the weekly, tweeted, “Congratulations to Zachary Quinto, out and proud in the new issue of New York magazine.” Just a year ago, when asked in a New York Times article about Internet rumors about his sexuality, Quinto told the paper, “The fact that these things are such hot-button issues right now, socially and politically, I would much rather talk about that than talk about who I sleep with.” SOURCE

UPDATE The interview is now live on nymag.com, it’s true Zachary is gay!

For one thing, he’s willing to unambiguously talk about his sexual orientation. His eight-month role in Angels in America was both “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding” he says. Having to inhabit that terrible lost world, if only in his mind, took a toll. “And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.” SOURCE

Sean Maher came out of the closet!

So if you’re one of the too few people devoted to the beloved but canceled show, Firefly, you remember Sean Maher, who played Simon Tam, the brother doctor of the kick-ass River Tam. You’ll also remember that he was the cute one, as opposed to Nathan Fillion‘s smoldering good looks and Adam Baldwin‘s hot-but-clinically-insane physique. Anyway, he has a new show out on NBC, The Playboy Club, and in order to promote it, Simon finally came out as a gay man in an interview with Entertainment Weekly!

“I’ve never discussed it publicly,” the 36-year-old continues. “I’ve never been asked about it publicly, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t paint a different picture.” Maher says that not coming out wasn’t so much a choice as much as it was a reality of the business when he first came to L.A. fresh out of college back in 1997. Publicists working with him during his first Tinseltown role as the title character on Fox’s short-lived cop drama Ryan Caulfield: Year One assumed he was straight — and he didn’t tell them otherwise, out of fear. “I’m 22, I move to L.A., and it’s such a cliché, but the day I arrive, publicists from the show took me out to The Ivy for lunch,” he remembers. “They’re telling me, ‘You know, gosh, we’d really appreciate it if you could keep your girlfriend on the side because we want to appeal to the female demographic of the show.’”

To be honest, I don’t altogether blame him for not coming out straight out of the gate, because Hollywood is fickle when it comes to casting and people don’t quite seem to understand that gay people can play straight people because that’s how acting works. But whatever, he finally came out and it’s good to have him on our team! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be in my bunk.
