Seth MacFarlane to voice Fry’s dog Seymour on ‘Futurama’

Bad news, everyone: Comedy Central has cancelled Futurama (AGAIN) despite some pretty great critical acclaim and a devoted viewership. Just yesterday, they kicked off the season with a pair of incredibly strong episodes, and by the looks of things, they’re carrying that momentum through to the end. Case in point, this season will feature a trip through Fry’s dreams that will include Fry’s dog, Seymour, as voiced by Seth MacFarlane. Now that you think about it, Jurassic Bark would have had a very different tone to it if MacFarlane was in it, wouldn’t it? Entertainment Weekly reports…

In a brief cameo for the animated comedy’s final season, the Family Guy creator will provide the voice of Fry’s tragically loyal canine, Seymour, who was featured in a 2002 episode. “This will be Seymour’s first and only spoken dialogue,” Futurama executive producer David X. Cohen tells EW. “Since Seth voices Family Guy‘s talking dog, Brian, we thought it would be funny to have him blatantly rip himself off for our benefit. As an added bonus, the only person he can sue is himself, so we’re off the hook.” In the episode, which airs Aug. 14, the Planet Express crew journeys into Fry’s dreams to pull off a mission in the year 1999. Sarah Silverman also pops up in her old role as Michelle, Fry’s girlfriend from the 20th century.

I have no idea if this is just going to be a quick easter egg or if they’re going to actually flesh it out as a way for Fry to get some closure, but either way? I’m curious to see how it plays out. Honestly, I hope Seth takes a bit of Futurama‘s care for its characters back to Family Guy with him, because … ugh. The show is great as a series of disconnected short-form sketches, but as a whole, it just seems stuck when it comes to character development. I get that sitcoms have to hit the reset button from week to week, but you’re not supposed to do it BEFORE THE EPISODE ENDS. That’s lazy writing is what it is.
