America’s next drag superstar is … the one who should have won, Raja (totally not your mama’s drag queen) took the crown on RuPaul’s Drag Race (airing on LOGO), the reality drag competition’s third season. The show has a history of crowning drag queens who’ve purely rested on pretty and have been devoid of any real personality. Finally, a ladyboy who’s pretty AND has talent won, hallelujah!
The final three hopefuls came down to Manilla Luzon, Alexis Mateo and Raja (no last name, just like Cher or Madonna). The girls filmed a music video with Mama-Ru for her 2009 dance single, Champion, in which they were dressed as dragged up Greek goddesses.
On the runway, each girl brought her unique own brand of drag, but only one was going to sashay away with the title, crown and prizes. Looks like RuPaul (whose new album Glamazon was just released) has been paying attention and decided the winner needed to be someone who could hold her own and really headline the Drag Race Pride Tour and be a bankable personality she could attach her name to.
