In an interview with GQ magazine, Winona Ryder talked about her past in Hollywood and about a run-in with Mel Gibson from 15 years ago. Spoiler alert! Even then he was a homophobic, anti-semitic prick. I know, right? I’m as shocked as you are. He always seemed like such a level-headed and loving person.
A Mel Gibson anecdote: “I remember, like, fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And he was really drunk. I was with my friend, who’s gay. He made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers,’ but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, ‘He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me!” SOURCE
So this was back in, what, 1995? If my recollection of the 90’s is as accurate as I think it is, chances are the conversation had a bunch of really racist pop culture references.
“Hey Winona, do you watch Friends? Why’s everyone so concerned about whether or not the Jewish guy and the lesbian are going to get together. The voices in my head tell me they’re going to hell anyway! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go yell at my wife about how she has to blow me before she can play Pokemon, or I’ll snap her Pikachu’s little homo neck.”
