This past Friday evening I attended the opening night of FELA! which is now back at downtown Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theatre by popular demand! I saw the musical (which originally premiered on Broadway back in 2009) a couple of months ago when it first played here in LA, and I loved it, so I couldn’t resist seeing it for a second time. This time the lovely Michelle Williams (of Destiny’s Child fame) joined the cast as Sandra Isidore, the woman who Fela Kuti fell in love with and also introduced him to the writings and politics of Malcolm X. The show is truly terrific and super energetic, it was such a fun night out and the audience totally loved every minute of it, topped off with a standing ovation! It’s a limited run engagement (FELA! is playing now through May 5th), so don’t miss out (buy tickets here) on catching Ms. Williams doing her thing up on stage, sounding and looking completely amazing.
First, you’ll feel it in your feet.
Then you’ll feel it in your soul.
That’s the undeniable power of FELA!
FELA! is both rave and theatrical wonder. Thanks to Fela’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award® winner Bill T. Jones, this tale of courage, passion and love will shake you: body and soul.
