I had only heard fab things about the off Broadway play, Buyer & Cellar, starring cutie Michael Urie (of Ugly Betty fame–who else misses that show?), so I was thrilled to hear Michael would be reprising his role here in Los Angeles. Last weekend I attended the official opening night at Center Theatre Group‘s intimate Mark Taper Forum, and I’m happy to report that show was everything I thought it would be–and more! Buyer & Cellar tells the tale of a struggling actor trying to make it in LA and ends up taking a job working in Barbra Streisand‘s basement in Malibu (which is actually a mini shopping mall with many of Babs’ possessions on display in various ‘stores’), without giving too much away, just trust me that hilarity does ensue. The fictitious story dreamt up by playwright Jonathan Tolins was easily one of the funniest plays I’ve ever seen, without a doubt I’d love to see it again. Michael’s tour-de-force performance was perfect, he had the audience cracking up the entire time, I didn’t want it to end! Buyer & Cellar is running now through August 17th (get tickets here), I can’t recommend this one enough, do NOT miss out on your chance to see this completely fabulous show.
Did you know Barbra Streisand has a shopping mall in her basement?
Buyer & Cellar … A fabulously fictitious hit comedy imagining what might transpire when an unemployed Hollywood actor goes to work in Barbra Streisand’s non-fictitious basement: an underground private shopping mall beneath her Malibu home.
The Funny Girl meets one funny boy when Michael Urie animates the stage with a cast of characters above and below ground, taking us on the ultimate fan fantasy in an absurdly hilarious, yet surprisingly tender look at celebrity and its eccentricities.
