R.I.P. Patrice O’Neal

Ah hell … I just got back from a funeral and I find out that the hilarious Patrice O’Neal died? Oh, the hell with today. Let’s just get drunk and call it a day. TMZ reports:

Comedian Patrice O’Neal died Tuesday morning … as a result of a stroke he suffered back in October … this according to his friends at the Opie and Anthony radio show. O’Neal had been a staple in the comedy world for years — and performed at the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen back in September. O’Neal was a regular guest on the Opie and Anthony radio show — and appeared on several TV shows such as Chappelle Show, The Office, and Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. Opie just tweeted, “Yes it’s true that our pal Patrice O’Neal has passed away. The funniest and best thinker I’ve ever known PERIOD.”

The world lost an insanely funny and wonderful human being. And yet Carlos Mencia is still alive. Our deepest condolences to Patrice’s family during this time.

R.I.P. Heavy D

Just in case you weren’t on the Internet yesterday, Heavy D (aka Dwight Arrington Myers) died after suffering an asthma attack. He was only 44 years old. TMZ reports:

Law enforcement tell TMZ … Heavy D had just returned from shopping and walked up some stairs when he began having trouble breathing. Adam Mills, a designer who was in the building and knew Heavy D, found him leaning against a railing and clearly in distress. Adam tells us he cradled Heavy D in his lap as others called 911. Adam says Heavy D was conscious and said to him, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.” When paramedics took Heavy D to the hospital he had a pulse. People in the building are saying he died of a heart attack, but we have not been able to confirm that. Law enforcement sources tell us … no foul play was involved and so far they only know the cause of death was “medical.”

As someone with cold-induced asthma, I can tell you it’s a total bitch, even with proper medication. Sad to hear that someone talented has passed like that. Our condolences to his family and friends at this time.

R.I.P. Steve Jobs

We all knew this was probably going to happen but it doesn’t make it any less sad, Apple‘s visionary co-founder Steve Jobs passed away today at the age of 56 after losing his eight-year battle with pancreatic cancer. There’s simply no doubt that he managed to change the world with his entrepreneurial spirit, incredible inventions and amazingly useful products that will continue to live on and enrich all of our digital lives. I swear by Apple products, it’s one of my favorite brands, I’m completely devastated by this terrible news. Thankfully Steve passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, he will definitely be missed.

R.I.P. Andy Whitfield

Sad news, everyone: Spartacus star Andy Whitfield died of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma yesterday after a long battle with the disease. He was only 39. The Huffington Post reports:

Whitfield died Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press. “On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer,” Whitfield’s wife Vashti said in a statement. “He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.”

While I wasn’t a regular viewer of the show, in the episodes I did catch I found Andy to be an incredibly talented actor and very handsome. Our condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Amy Winehouse: Rest In Peace

I still can’t seem to get my beloved Amy Winehouse out of my head, I’m still very upset about her sudden death this past weekend, at the age of 27. Her funeral took place in London earlier today, then she was cremated, her physical being has left this world forever, but Amy’s spirit and incredible talent remains. I was looking back on all my old posts about Amy, there were so many times that I talked about being worried and concerned for her health, even saying I never wanted to do a post on her death. It’s still hard to believe for me that in the end I did actually have to to write about her passing away, she is someone I will not soon forget. I pray that she’s finally at peace, below is the lovely cover for the latest issue of NME magazine, that shot of Amy sporting her devilish grin is stunning, this is how I will choose to remember her.

My beloved Amy Winehouse, dead at age 27

I seriously don’t even where to start … I’m totally devastated over hearing about the passing of my beloved Amy Winehouse. I first discovered the British soul singer back in 2006 by way of her incredible Grammy-winning album Back To Black, and since then there’s been over seventy posts about Ms. Winehouse here on PopBytes. Many of those posts chronicled her descent into drug and alcohol addiction that in the end killed her at the age of 27. I tried to remain hopeful during the past few years that she would finally get her act together and move on from the demons that plagued her but sadly Amy simply could not escape what tortured her soul. I feel blessed to have seen Amy’s one and only Los Angeles show at the legendary Roxy on Sunset Blvd. back in March of 2007, although she was a bit of a mess, she did manage to put on an incredible show that I’ll never forget. I’m not surprised over the news that she was found dead in her London apartment today, but it still doesn’t make the terrible news any less painful. Thankfully her music will live on, but it’s such a tragedy that her life was cut so short, and by her own doing. My thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family, may Amy Winehouse finally be at peace, I will miss you girl.

Amy Winehouse has passed away at age 27

Singer Amy Winehouse is dead at age 27. I don’t think that’s a surprising statement – that it happened sooner rather than later. She had immense talent, but in the later stage of her life she was clearly not sober. It may seem like I’m being insensitive to her passing, but my thoughts truly go out to her family and loved ones. What I am saying is that when someone is an addict, which there’s no arguing – she was, it isn’t surprising when they die. Amy had many more resources available to her to get sober than a typical person does, but she unfortunately could not beat her demons. She made awesome music. 2006′s Back to Black is an amazing Grammy-winning album. I am saddened that she’s gone and her gift will not be shared again. The cause of her death has not yet been released.

Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in London. The Back To Black singer was found at the property by emergency services at 3.54pm. Her death is being treated as ‘unexplained’ by police. Winehouse was apparently ‘beyond help’ when paramedics arrived, according to Sky sources. Two ambulance crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and a paramedic on a bicycle also attended, according to a spokeswoman. ‘Sadly the patient had died,’ she added. In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. ‘On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.’ SOURCE
