... it's my darling liza minnelli who attended the VH1 diva show held last night held at BAM (brooklyn academy of music) i watched most of it and i think the network should put their diva show back up on the shelf ... some of the performances were decent (adele, jennifer hudson, kelly clarkson, jordin sparks) but then you had miley cyrus belting out her shitty new single party in the usa (girlfriend ruined the party) she's not even allowed to vote or drink yet - she's hardly what i would consider a diva! when i hear that term i think of peeps like whitney houston (of course), tina turner, madonna, grace jones, cher, celine dion, bette midler, barbara streisand, diana ross, mariah carey, and last but not least - ms. minnelli! (if there's any divas i forgot to include - let me know - i know i must have forgot someone) as for host paula abdul - i loved seeing her little (lip synced) trip down memory lane number in the beginning but she was acting a bit wacky & loopy - once again - too many happy pills (i do love that woman yet she makes an easy target ... just ask kathy griffin) i seriously hope this is the last faux diva special we'll be subjected to for a while - unless they can get some actual divas to sing at the party! popbytes over & out for now ... xoxo
hey hey! so if you've read any of my tweets from the past two days - you already know how i feel about liza minnelli's two-night stint over at the hollywood bowl (a truly magical place) she was amazing! of course being a die hard liza fan - i had to go both nights - and i'm so happy i did - both shows were equally excellent - i can't stop thinking about it! plus i was in good company - the first night - a lovely mother and daughter team who were total liza fans (they snapped some great pictures - check 'em out below) the second night another group of really nice die hard liza fans! now of course it's not 1972 anymore (the year cabaret was released - which garnered ms. minnelli an academy award for best actress) but 37 years later girlfriend (age 63) is still kicking and really did put on a stellar show - which included a number of her standards (maybe this time, cabaret, liza with a z, and of course new york, new york) and took on some songs i hadn't heard before like what makes a man a man, i would never leave you and teach me tonight which she opened with ... for the record - nobody needs to teach liza anything - it's the other way around ... she definitely taught us a thing or two! she's been on stage performing since she was a teenager - and she's worked with just about everyone in the business - and because of her infamous parents judy garland & vincent minnelli - she ran with a crowd that included people like rat packers frank sinatra and sammy davis jr. - she's led a truly legendary life - i was so happy to see her up their doing her thing with a twelve-piece band (including billy stritch on piano) and no backup singers! thankfully she still sounded great (her voice isn't what it used to be but she still can sing better than i can!) she looked excellent - her infectious energy & triumphant spirit is unmatched! (liza even got a standing ovation right at the start) she was the one person that i was truly dying to see someday in person - i'm thrilled i actually got to see her two evenings in a row - a gay boy's lifelong dream come true! (there's two videos below - the audio came out great) next month she's playing over in las vegas - where she'll be taping her tony-winning broadway show liza's at the palace for a DVD - i can't wait for that to come out! all the odds were in liza's favor this weekend - she definitely won this time around! popbytes over & out for now ... xoxo
PS everyone i talked to at both shows felt the same way i did - liza kicked ass!
UPDATE! OH MY WORD! i had the best time tonight! below i said that liza minnelli wasn't what she used to be - but i totally regret that statement - i take it all back ... she was AMAZING tonight ... i can't even begin to tell you - it was one of the best shows i've been to - and i've seen many shows and this show at the hollywood bowl truly ranks among the best of 'em! i'm beyond psyched to see her again saturday night - i'll do a full review soon ... long live liza (with a Z) xoxo!
good evening! although i'm still super excited to see liza minnelli at the hollywood bowl tonight - the unexpected news of DJ AM (aka adam goldstein) passing away (at age 36) really threw me for a loop ... i swear these past few months have been truly devastating - we've lost so many great people before their time - i can't remember so many deaths in one year - it's really bizarre and creepy - 2009 ... the year of death! anyways i'm going to leave you with ms. minnelli's rousing performance of but the world goes round from her appearance on the late late show with craig ferguson last week - she's certainly not what she used to be (heck, she's 63) but i just adore her wacky energy and over the top campy vibe ... she's the best - a total living legend! of course i'll try and twitter from the bowl - since i don't get reception on my iphone over there - i actually dug out my blackberry ... hopefully i'll have better luck with that! popbytes over & out for tonight - much love to all as always ... xoxo
what's there to say about liza minnelli that i haven't said before? i live for liza - she's the best - i'm super angry with myself over not making it to new york city this past december to catch her broadway revue show liza's at the palace but thankfullya recording of the show has been released (i must pick it up tomorrow!) that's why my darling ms. minnelli was at barnes & noble in lincoln triangle earlier today (gosh i'm so out of the NYC loop - that must be new) she was signing copies and also performed a few numbers in the store (photos below) she seriously needs to get her ass out to los angeles - i'd simply die if i ever saw her perform in person - and oh my word - if i ever met her...i think my head would explode with joy! popbytes over & out for tonight...xoxo
good morning! what could possibly make friday better than it already is? a dash of liza minnelli - yes, she makes all the difference! (at least for me - i totally get off on her - not like that but you know what i mean) girlfriend kicked off her new broadway revue show liza's at the palace earlier this week in NYC (playing until december 28th) i'd kill to see her perform live but a trip to new york isn't so convenient right now (however i am taking a long overdue vacation very soon!) maybe she'll bring her act to los angeles at some point! of course she's not what she used to be but she puts herself out there - and i love that about her - along with all her mannerisms & tics plus her general wacky vibe - but wacky in a good way (unlike her pal michael jackson who is wacky in a creepy way...) the picture below with the spotlight highlighting what she has underneath her red outfit (how very seasonal of her) totally reminds me of this week's gossip girl when 'vanessa' was caught at the snowflake charity ball in a sheer dress (made by 'jenny' for revenge over 'nate') ms. minnelli is a national treasure - she always puts me in a good mood - i'd come on over to her cabaret anytime! popbytes over & out for now...xoxo
good evening! of course i can't resist doing a post about one of my favorite ladies - ms. liza minnelli who performed last night (although she had visa drama upon entering the UK) at london's coliseum (read a kind review) looking great (heck - what can you really say about a lady who paints her eyebrows on? she does what she can...) at age 62 she's been through the ringer over the years - battling personal demons including drugs, alcohol, weight, and has already had two hip replacements (not to mention her disastrous 4th marriage to fug david gest - she's never been lucky in love)
yet she still manages to pull herself together - of course she's a bit messy these days but you have to give liza plenty of points for effort & her exuberant spirit! i've never seen her live - that would be the ultimate even if she isn't what she used to be (her oscar-winning performance as 'sally bowles' (w/ her signature green fingernails) in 1972's cabaret is ranked my top female performance of all-time) i just love her to pieces - along with her mom judy garland - may she rest in peace (yes i know it's all so very stereotypical 'gay' but i simply cannot pass up liza or judy!)
i found an old clip of liza appearing on the muppet show back in 1979 - singing 'everything's coming up roses' - holy cow - i'd love to see ms. minnelli tackle the role of 'mama rose' from gypsy (unfortunately i think that ship has sailed) tomorrow it's back to the daily grind - i'm so over the three day weekend which wasn't all that i anticipated - popbytes over & out for tonight...xxoo
PS for the ultimate 80s liza treat - check out don't drop bombs on itunes!
good evening y'all! i suppose since i'm gay that i was born with the gene that makes you love & worship liza minnelli to no end - gosh i freakin' adore her! just the other night i tossed on the DVD of liza with a 'z' her now classic & amazing NYC concert taped for television back in 1972! she is beyond talented - nothing can compare to her oscar-winning performance as 'sally bowles' in cabaret! although today she's a drop on the messy side - she is still tops for me! (thank heavens she got herself away from that creepy & ugly as homemade sin david gest - ugh - i can't stand him!) just the other night she performed in marbella (spain) at the puente romano hotel in costa del sol (pictures are posted below) i've never seen her live - oh my gosh - that would be my ultimate concert fantasy! in addition to the pictures - i've posted a quite campy video of ms. minnelli from back in '89 singing a song called don't drop bombs - i had never seen or heard of it until tonight - it's a must see! popbytes over & out for tonight - and long live my liza - xxoo!
oh my word - this is the best! the liza minnelli & david gest reality show pilot (filmed back in 2002) has leaked onto you tube! special thanks to my cool neighbors over at the wow report for first posting the good times of liza & david! it's so funny i just watched the amazing '72 TV special liza with a 'z' over the weekend on DVD which i picked up at the sunset strip tower recordsclosing sale (very sad) so ms. minnelli was already on my mind...check her out embedded below in part 3 of the show - she does a bit of georgia on my mind with legend ray charles in her apartment (may he rest in peace...poor thing is being dug up on the net with liza & david!) i still am shocked those two were even married (and michael jackson and liz taylor was there!) if i had to name someone the most ugly freaky person of all-time...yes david gest would surely be a nominee! long live our dear liza - gosh i could watch her all day long! (yes liza does seem like a typical 'gay' topic but whichever way you swing - you have to admit she's simply a blast to watch) popbytes over & out for now - xxoo!
UPDATE sadly the liza & david files were removed - screw youtube - anyways i've added a 1984 liza performance with chita rivera...good stuff as always with liza!
hey y' all! it's saturday & was a nice sunny day here in los angeles! popbytes did a bit of relaxing - this past week was a little intense but anyhoo i am so excited for this post! i have only seen bits & parts of liza minnelli's legendary broadway concert performance from 1972 - titled as we all know liza with a 'z' that was aired originally as a TV special - it has been restored and digitally remastered - it's now available in stores on DVD and is airing on showtime - below is the trailer from our blessed youtube - plus some recent pictures of ms. liza doing an autograph signing at tower records in lincoln square NYC - we all need to appreciate her while we still can - gosh it just won't be the same without her wild liza-ntics - popbytes over & out for now - xxoo!
...and finally for today a HUGE 'happy birthday' is going out to one of our favorite ladies ever - ms. liza minnelli who turns 60 today! yes our dear liza has hit the big six-zero! wild! my pal nathan has an awesome post on ms. minnelli over at film experience - so be sure to check that out - i wonder how liza celebrated? here is to another 60 years of crazy liza! popbytes over & out with much birthday love for our 'sally bowles' - life surely is a cabaret with liza! xxoo!
