good morning y'all! i think everyone secretly has a little love for bon jovi although i'm sure some people don't want to openly admit to it...this week's mashup selection from my pal DJ paul v. takes the boys from jersey and mashes 'em up with french electro duo daft punk and the resulting track kicks ass - please enjoy the good times below! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo
†FROM DJ PAUL V. So, will we ever get sick of mashups featuring Daft Punk? I sure won't (even if they are one of the most mashed artists on the planet). They always provide the perfect groove, and make whoever you mash them with even more exciting. So imagine how awesome and cheesy it would be to use some Bon Jovi! I played this mashup from DJ Payroll at the last Bootie LA and the crowd went bananas, singing/screaming the chorus as loud as they could. It made me wonder if I was actually in Los Angeles - or New Jersey! Get out ya hair mousse and headbands, kids!
good morning boys & girls! it's mashup time here on popbytes and anything involving salt n' pepa is totally ok by me - gosh i love their 1993 album very necessary which still kicks major ass! many thanks go out to my pal DJ paul v. who keeps bringing us without fail the best of the best mashups week after week! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo
†FROM DJ PAUL V. Remember when Fergie dropped her big hit, 'Fergalicious'? Did you keep digging in the back of your brain wondering 'what does this song remind me of?' Well, if you didn't solve the mystery yourself, I will. Fergie basically copped two songs: 'Push It' by Salt 'N Pepa (who I hope will be back on reality TV soon!) and 'Supersonic' by JJ Fad, both fresh 'n funky, late 80's b-girls. LA's own DJ Axel decided to expose the rip-off - er, I mean, inspiration - and it's part of his super cool mega-mashup project, Breakin' The Law. Also check out the excellent VJ Brewski video embedded below!
PS to my LA peeps: It's that time of the month again for BOOTIE LA at The Echoplex - this Saturday May 3rd. We love our much bigger space, and I'll be spinning with guest DJ's Party Ben (always a crowd banger) and this week's mash maker, DJ Axel. Hey, look here to see who showed up like a 'rock lobster' last month!
good morning! i was so excited when i discovered this week's mashup selection from DJ paul v. involved one of my favorite up & coming singers duffy (who i just posted about the other day) i'd love to see her make it big here in the states - her hit single mercy is starting to get some good buzz on and next month duffy's incredible debut album rockferry will be released in the US on may 13th - she's just getting started - please keep your eyes on her! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo!
†FROM DJ PAUL V. This week we showcase some white folks who have lots of soul. The first were the boys from the 70's, The Doobie Brothers. 'Long Train Running' is a funky classic rock hit for sure, and on the other end of the spectrum is UK newcomer Duffy (who I adore!) She's already blowing up in England and just now seeing her buzz hit the states in a big way. Her 'Mercy' is a fabulous slice of retro boogaloo. This mashup was made by newcomer DJY Alias JY, who took the excellent Duffy remix by Dunproofin (which you should get too) and gets the locomotion chugging by mashing in the Doobies. Spark it up!
good morning! hip hip hooray - it's time for the 'mashup of the week' and this track selected by my pal DJ paul v.totally put me in a good mood - not only does it feature destiny's child (oh my gosh - i miss them being together!) it also has kelly rowland's solo hit single 'like this' - i seriously hope we'll be seeing a reunion of the ladies sooner rather than later! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo!
†FROM DJ PAUL V. One of my favorite records from 2007 was 'I Created Disco' from the UK's Calvin Harris. The dude is only like 24 years old, and while he didn't create disco, he's already producing big names like Kylie Minogue and remixing hipsters like The Ting Tings and CSS. His Acceptable In The 80's jam is just about the bounciest slice of electropop fun you'll hear, and since I had three tracks that mashed it up, I decided to combo them up into my own megamix. It features a solo Kelly Rowland plus Destiny's Child, and some British dude named Marvin The Martian, who did his own freestyle over the track (which caught some buzz on the UK charts). Calvin plays in Los Angeles next week and at Coachella on April 26th.
good morning! any day that starts off with a touch of dolly parton has to be a good one right?!? this week once again DJ paul v. managed to select a fun track that involves ms. parton's cover of 'she drives me crazy' in combination with the original song! anybody who doesn't enjoy a little dolly now & again should have their head checked - she's the best! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo!
†FROM DJ PAUL V. This week's mix is more of a fantasy marriage than a mashup, meaning it's the same song done by two different people. The first is the original track - Fine Young Cannibals' She Drives Me Crazy - and the second is the new version from our lovable 'Backwoods Barbie' Miss Dolly Parton. Apollo Zero (who always has his ears tuned to the goings-on in the pop world) said he couldn't resist trying out the combo. And I think you'll agree when the 80's meets this lady (and just a tinge of her twang) it's simply irresistible!
good morning! it's time for the 'mashup of the week' selected by my pal DJ paul v. - it's cher vs. snoop dogg - and you'll be amazed how well the two blend & mash together! i thought snoop's track was called 'sensual seduction' but actually it's 'sexual eruption' - the title was changed/censored to be more family friendly on the radio and TV! anyways check out the track below - popbytes over & out for now...xxoo!
†FROM DJ PAUL V. Remember back when Cher dropped 'Believe' and everyone was like - what's that weird effect thing going on with her voice? Well, it's called the auto-tune, and since then it's been used quite a bit, most recently by Mr. Snoop Dogg on 'Sexual Eruption.' So of course, the creative minds of A plus D (my Bootie LA co-conspirators) envisioned the two of them in bed together. Well, musically, that is. The end result is like creamy peanut butter dipped in sweet chocolate, with a generous heaping of cheese! Do you believe?
PS to my LA peeps: Come join us spinning the hottest mashups at Bootie LA, this Saturday night April 5th. The turnout has been so strong, we're moving into the much bigger room inside The Echoplex (just beneath The Echo) in Echo Park. It's gonna be a blast!
good morning boys & girls! today's mashup of the week selection from DJ paul v. marks the 100th mashup to be posted here on popbytes! many thanks to paul v. who has never let me down in almost two whole years - i am eternally grateful! i love having the column and i hope you all enjoy the mashes as much as i do - here's to the next hundred! (you can find all the previous ninety-nine mashups in the archive) popbytes over & out for now...xxoo!
†FROM DJ PAUL V. Well well well - we're up to 100 mashups here on popbytes - how cool! Seeing as we got a little serious and political last week, this week we need to unleash some fun. Don't let the title fool you, though - because the only thing urgent about this situation is how quickly you should check it out. Here, DJ Lobsterdust (a bonafide star here on popbytes) brings you Foreigner (from 1981, when rock bands jumped on the "disco hit" train) meshed with a real disco hit of the era, "Situation" from Yazoo - who, by the way, will be doing their first US tour in 25 years this July! So get out the horns 'n synths and strike up the band!
good morning! it's thursday and as per usual here's the latest 'mashup of the week' selected by my pal DJ paul v. who has picked a track definitely making a statement about the war over in iraq which has now gone on for five very long years - it seems like just yesterday when it started - i can't believe how fast time flies! hopefully with a new democratic president coming into office next year we'll see an end to the war - whether it be hillary clinton or barack obama remains yet to be seen - i'll be happy either way as long as john mccain doesn't win...as you know i hate getting political on here but enough is enough - it's totally time to bring the conflict to an end and i'm sure many of you agree - that being said i still have the utmost respect for the brave young men and women who are fighting with their lives on behalf of the united states - popbytes over & out for now...xxoo
†FROM DJ PAUL V. We all know how well-made mashups can be nothing more than silly and sometimes frivolous fun. Other times, mash makers use their skills to voice a serious statement, and this is just such a mashup. Even though it was created right after we invaded and occupied Iraq, it has lost none of its powerful impact or brutal truth. To mark the 5th year of this tragic situation (to which Dick Cheney arrogantly says "so what?" if US citizens disapprove) give a listen to Eve Massacre putting together classic Bob Dylan, Jello Biafra, The Cure, and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, along with Missy Elliott working the beats. It's good brain food until we can finally get our troops home and out of harm's way. Peace, not war!
good morning! thankfully i'm feeling a lot better than yesterday - and this latest mashup selection from DJ paul v. has helped kick my ass into high gear this morning - it's a lovely blend of some nifty musical ingredients - please enjoy the track below - and let's all keep in mind tomorrow is friday - almost time for the weekend! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo!
†FROM DJ PAUL V. This past Friday March 7th marked the 25th anniversary of the release of the biggest selling 12" single of all time: Blue Monday by New Order. Did you know it was inspired by both Sylvester and Donna Summer? It's been covered by Orgy & Nouvelle Vague, and M.I.A. & Rihanna both sample it on their latest records. It has inspired countless electronic bands and artists, and I bet you've probably danced to it 1000x or heard it as many - and I bet you still love all 7+ minutes of it. It's also been mashed countless times - most famously by Kylie Minogue - but this latest mix by DJ Copycat is truly extra special. It features Bronski Beat and a band called Superbass, all coalesced in a sublime and gorgeous blend.
good morning! every wednesday night i can rest a little easier knowing that DJ paul v. will be sending me a new mashup to post here on thursday morning! he always drops great tracks and i absolutely love this week's mashalicious number featuring a bunch of people including britney spears and ashlee simpson plus there's a video of the mashup which you'll also find below! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo!
†FROM DJ PAUL V. Remember awhile back when we dropped that awesome Kelly vs. Britney mashup? Well, the dude that brought us that is up to his old tricks again, and apparently he can't get enough of Miss Brit Brit. Normally, I would probably poo poo any mashup featuring someone as lightweight as Ashlee Simpson (she just bugs me!) but I can't lie: I loved this mash the minute I heard it. Titus Jones takes us all over the dance floor with Chris Brown, T-Pain, Missy Elliott, Ciara, and the two aforementioned divas. Pucker up! If you need pretty pictures go along with it, watch the video here or below!
