Ingrid Michaelson’s 2011 Holiday Hop!

Ingrid Michaelson

“I want to kill you in the backyard and bury you in snow,” Ingrid Michaelson sang over an upbeat piano freestyle on stage. “This is a holiday song, right?” she asked the audience at her fifth annual Christmas concert (or as she calls it, the “holiday hop”) in New York City last weekend. “It’s got the word ‘snow’ it is so … there you go! That’s all you need!” she rationalized.

“I like to think all these horrible songs are going to be on Grey’s Anatomy or something,” she continued when the freestyle was over, teasing the television show whose soundtrack has unofficially dubbed her its go-to featured musician.

The fact that she is featured on shows like Grey’s, however, has given Ingrid a visibility that many singer/songwriters can only dream of. Her music has been used to accompany various mediums – whether film, TV dramas, reality shows or commercials – and her star doesn’t seem to be dimming at all. Last year, she was even invited to perform her holiday duet with Sara Bareilles, “Winter Song,” at the White House’s National Christmas Tree lighting. Not bad for a ukulele-strumming girl from Staten Island, right?

Opening the Holiday Hop this year was … well, Ingrid Michaelson. Concealing her natural long and voluptuous auburn hair under a short silver wig, she came on stage with her equally disguised band and backup singers as part of an Italian Staten Island caroling choir. Together, they sang holiday standards with lyrics made over to be about food and gave holiday twists to some 2011 chart-toppers (i.e. the Maroon 5/Christina Aguilera parody, “Moves Like Santa”).

That’s one thing you can always expect from an Ingrid Michaelson concert: unabashed humor. For a lyricist whose songs are often rather melancholy in tone, Ingrid without fail manages to inject each of her shows with a degree of humor that few musicians are capable of doing – making her one of the most pleasurable, memorable and relatable artists to see live.

“We just got engaged at your show!” a couple screamed to the chanteuse from the back of the Music Hall of Williamsburg after the audience had just surprised Ingrid by singing her “Happy Birthday.”

“That’s great but I think we were talking about ME,” she joked back before congratulating them. “Anyone else have any big announcements while we’re at it? Next someone is going to be like ‘Oh, we left for a little because “The Chain” is boring and we had sex in the bathroom and now I’m pregnant.’”

On January 24th, Ingrid will be releasing her highly anticipated fourth album, Human Again. At the show, she gave fans a sneak peek by performing two tracks off of it: the gorgeous and haunting lead single, “Ghost,” and the catchy song that she debuted while performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year, “Blood Brothers.”

If these songs are any indication of what Human Again will sound like, Ingrid may be following in the footsteps of friend Sara Bareilles and should prepare to be the Billboard chart’s favorite new “indie” girl. After all, her last album (2009’s Everybody) debuted at #18 on the U.S. charts – a testament to the power of her fans (especially considering that she hasn’t had a mainstream crossover radio hit – yet).

“You guys just screamed like Justin Bieber fans!” Ingrid laughed to the crowd, which was literally roaring with delight upon hearing the opening notes to her song, “Parachute.” She has such die-hard fans, in fact, that this year’s Holiday Hop sold out entirely from an exclusive presale provided to people on Ingrid’s virtual mailing list. Plans to release the tickets a few days later to the general public had to be scrapped because there were none left.

Embracing the quirky and festive nature of the evening, Ingrid alternated her set list between tracks from her previous releases and covers of songs that define the holiday season for her. In between fan-favorites like “You And I,” “Maybe,” “The Way I Am” and “Soldier,” she played “Sally’s Song” from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and an upbeat rock medley of holiday tunes like “White Christmas,” “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer,” “The Dreidl Song” and “Jingle Bells.” She closed with a traditional hymn, “In The Bleak Mid-Winter” – which also happened to be written by Ingrid’s father and was performed as a surprise early Christmas gift to him (awww).

Then of course there was her cover of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” the song she sings every year before leaving the stage prior to her encore. Originated by Judy Garland in the film Meet Me In St. Louis, Ingrid has always called the song her favorite. “I have such a love for her,” Ingrid said to me of Garland when I interviewed her a couple of years back. Her cover of the song was just released for purchase on iTunes last week and as part of an exclusive digital holiday EP in her official web store.

For the last five years, I’ve attended each Holiday Hop that Ingrid has put on. There’s just something about seeing one of your favorite musicians decked out in green and red (and glittery golden stilettos that her “podiatrist would not be happy about”), tossing Christmas candy from the keys of her piano to her audience. It’s something that has become a quintessential part of my celebration of the holidays each year.

When I left the venue, I immediately craved hot apple cider. I wanted to watch Elf and write holiday cards and wrap gifts. I wanted to go ice-skating, take a stroll through the Union Square holiday market and go check out the window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue and the Rockefeller Christmas tree. I was so annoyingly festive that even I wanted to murder me in the backyard and bury me in snow.

So as it is every year, Ingrid Michaelson’s Holiday Hop was not just a terrific concert to attend. It was also the best possible way I could think of to kick off this holiday season. See you at the Holiday Hop in 2012!

“Human Again” is available for pre-order on iTunes and from Ingrid’s official web store now.

Unstaged: Duran Duran directed by David Lynch

Last week I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of Duran Duran‘s official VIP bloggers at their Unstaged (presented by American Express) performance at downtown Los Angeles’ famed Mayan Theater, and it was truly a magical night from start to finish! First we were treated to a tasty dinner as rehearsals were still taking place on stage, then our small group was escorted to the blogger’s lounge where I was able to use my laptop to tweet during the show, complete with WiFi and drinks! The band put on an amazing show, a mix of old and new material (from their new thirteenth studio album All You Need Is Now) and the entire show was streamed on VEVO, all under the guidance of legendary director, David Lynch! Special guests dropped by to perform with the band, including Beth Ditto, Kelis, cutie Mark Ronson (who produced their new album which has garnered tons of good buzz), and Gerard Way (from My Chemical Romance).

After the show, we made our way to the after party, which was super fun and I got to chat with a couple of celebs including Marilyn Manson, Samantha Ronson (and her brother Mark) and Kelis! In case you missed the show, all the videos are available on their VEVO page, I seriously love how David Lynch added his own unique visual touch to each and every song! Below are two of my favorite performances, their classic track Notorious (with Beth Ditto) and The Man Who Stole a Leopard (off the new album with Kelis). I must give thanks to my pal Sasha who totally hooked me up, it was one of the best events I’ve ever covered for PopBytes. Now I can check off ‘see Duran Duran live’ on my bucket list!

Tonight: Duran Duran and David Lynch!

I’m beyond excited for tonight’s Duran Duran show, taking place at downtown Los Angeles’ famed Mayan Theater! Of course I’m a huge fan of the band and have been for years but never had the chance to see them perform live until tonight! The best part is that the concert will be streaming live (10PM ET / 7PM PT) on their VEVO channel, to boot the show is being directed by one of my favorite filmmakers, David Lynch! It’s all part of UNSTAGED, an original series from American Express in partnership with YouTube and VEVO! So please make sure to tune in tonight, I will be at the show, tweeting and blogging the entire time, from a ‘bloggers lounge’ (complete with drinks and dinner)! The band is also celebrating the release of their brand new album, All You Need Is Now (released yesterday), which I’ve heard great things about plus I’m sure they will be playing some of their most beloved hits, such as Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf and Save A Prayer, the list could easily go on and on, over the past thirty years they have been one of the most prolific bands on the planet. I know that tonight is going to be an amazing experience, I’m thrilled you’ll all be able to watch the show with me, I promise good times are coming!

Video Fix: Time for Gorillaz!

Good evening y’all! It has been a super busy day for me, and right now I’m about to head over to Universal City to catch one of my all-time favorite bands, Gorillaz (ever since the release of their completely brilliant album from 2005, Demon Days), on their Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour! I actually waited until the very last minute to secure myself a ticket, and luckily I ended up getting a seat in the front row of the orchestra section! I’ve heard they’re amazing live, I haven’t been this excited for a show in a long time! I’ll try to tweet updates from the show, so stay tuned! Popbytes over and out for now … xoxo!

Joan Osborne – One Of Us – Live at The Roxy

As promised on Twitter last night, here’s the incredible Joan Osborne singing her hit single One Of Us (recently featured on Glee) at The Roxy yesterday! I have to say her show was one of the best I’ve seen recently! I fell in love with her debut album Relish back in 1995, and when she opened with St. Teresa, I got all teary-eyed, it was amazing to see someone live (in such a small and intimate setting) who I have admired for such a long time! She played a bunch of new material, everything was stellar and Joan even had four people joining her on strings (two violins, a viola and a cello) I just can’t say enough, she sounded fantastic and looked fabulous, it was simply a wonderful evening all around – except the rain!

Video Fix: Gorillaz go live on Letterman!

Virtual rock band Gorillaz performed an exclusive concert from the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC on October 7th, 2010. Don’t miss their ESCAPE TO PLASTIC BEACH world tour, coming to North America this month!

Marina And the Diamonds (At Los Angeles’ El Rey)

I think I was so excited about my interview with Marina And The Diamonds – that I almost forgot about doing a post on her show at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre on September 17th! It was the very last night of her most recent tour of the states and what an amazing show she put on (there’s two great videos below – you can find more here and here!) My only complaint was that she didn’t sing Hermit The Frog – which happens to be my favorite track off her incredible debut album The Family Jewels (the full setlist is below) I loved seeing Marina with her full band this time – back in July she played at the Troubadour but that was more of a stripped down show (I also noticed she seemed to be more comfortable performing this time around!) I also got to catch up with one of my very dear friends, Raven, who took the pictures below … there’s more on her blog (and make sure to follow her on Twitter – she’s such a doll!) After the show I got to chat with Marina again for a brief moment – after I thanked her profusely for allowing me to interview her earlier in the evening, she told me that she’d be coming back to LA in February – I hope she’ll be working on her next album – I can’t wait to see what girlfriend has up her sleeve! Popbytes over and out for now … xoxo!

goldfrapp kicked ass at the hollywood bowl!

last night i had the pleasure of seeing goldfrapp (again) play at the hollywood bowl (a five-minute walk from my apartment) the last of only four tour dates here in the states and of course it was a magical evening all around – that’s how the bowl rolls (you can bring in your own food and wine – it’s such a great experience!) although i missed the first opening act tune-yards – i manged to catch orquesta buena vista social club – and they were amazing – people were on their feet dancing to the hot cuban rhythms! then alison goldfrapp (who at age 43 just came out as a lesbian) and company took to the stage as the stars were shining up above – her vocals were spot on and the sound was incredible – they played a sweet mixture from their four albums (the setlist is below) including a bunch of tracks from their latest release head first – which has already safely secured a spot in my top favorite albums of 2010 – it’s super fun and tight from start to finish – i definitely recommend giving it a spin if you haven’t already – pure pop perfection! popbytes over & out for now … xoxo

i’m off to see courtney love / hole!

oh i was super excited to see courtney love with her band HOLE tonight at the fonda’s music box but after reading my buddy trent‘s (pink is the new blog) lackluster review of last night’s show – my excitement level has definitely dropped a bit … girlfriend only played for about forty-five minutes – a huge disappointment for everyone in attendance (that comes out to one dollar a minute – tickets were $45 bucks!) hopefully tonight she’ll play longer but i’m not going to hold my breath! i had planned on camping out earlier today so i could be right up in the front but i decided to scrap that idea – i wasn’t going to wait for hours outside so i could see a super short set! below are some pictures from the show last night – i will try to twitter what’s going on at tonight’s show plus i’ll update this post when i return home with my thoughts on ms. love’s performance! popbytes over & out for now … xoxo

PS if you haven’t heard HOLE‘s new totally kick-ass album nobody’s daughter – you can listen to the entire thing for free by heading over to spin.com!
