The 84th Annual Academy Awards

Eddie Murphy hosting the Oscars! A Bad idea?

News is forthcoming about the 84th Annual Academy Awards ceremony to be held on February 26th, 2012, and some of it isn’t pleasing the masses. The latest news on the big event has Eddie Murphy confirmed as the host for the festivities … leaving many confused and at least a few questioning the choice of emcee. I guess (stoner) James Franco and Anne Hathaway haven’t been invited back after last year’s debacle. In recent years Murphy’s been more notorious for flopped films like Imagine That, Meet Dave, and the commercially successful but critically panned Norbit (plus a paternity suit). I should mentions he has had a few good turns in films like the Shrek series and his Oscar-nominated role in Dreamgirls, (upon losing he left the ceremony), nonetheless Murphy is a fading star in the comedy world, straying far from his stand up / SNL roots. I can only surmise that the Oscar producers are getting desperate to woo back viewers with any gimmick available, in recent years TV viewers have been avoiding the program like the plague. Only one thing is for sure, they’ve got to try harder than this to earn back a tired public. Will Eddie Murphy be able bring viewers to Hollywood’s biggest night? Sound off in the comments section below!

Oprah, Darth Vader to receive Oscars!

Somehow, neither Oprah nor James Earl Jones have ever won an Oscar, which is really weird because one is known to the world as an enigmatic overlord known for their ability to control things with their mind and an army at their beck and call, and the other played Darth Vader. Anyway, the Academy Awards are going to be acknowledging their contributions by awarding the two of them as well as make-up artist Dick Smith with lifetime achievement awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says that Winfrey, along with legendary actor James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith, will be honored with Oscar statuettes at the Governors Awards in November. The academy’s Board of Governors voted Tuesday to recognize the trio for their individual achievements. Winfrey, 57, — well known for her charitable works — will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which honors philanthropic and humanitarian contributions. Jones, 80, and Smith – known as the “godfather of makeup” will receive honorary Oscars for their outstanding careers. SOURCE

I really am surprised they haven’t won Oscars at this point. Well, except for Dick Smith, that guy has a little golden man in the bag. That being said, I always kind of thought it was weird for people to announce this now, in the middle of August, when the Oscars are still more than half a year away. I’m just saying, are you trying to drag this out as long as possible? Mean.

Oprah Winfrey

Anne and James hate each other now!

So if you all remember how the Oscars turned out, and honestly how could I forget at this point, you’ll remember that James Franco basically just mumbled a couple lines while maintaining the exact same stance throughout the entire show while Anne Hathaway pretty much had to carry the entire show by herself. Well, it turns out she might not be too pleased. By which I mean they hate each other. A lot.

“She had to provide all the energy — he was just phoning it in,” says a second insider. (“James seemed in his own little world,” during the Oscar telecast, says another source. “Producers were pissed.”) In fact, as UsMagazine.com reported Monday, after the awards, Franco, 32, skipped his own party at L.A.’s The Writer’s Room. “He went immediately back to NYC because he was pissed about how the show went,” adds a third source. SOURCE

Actually, you know what? I believe this. Think about it: Anne sang, danced, went through something like six or seven costume changes, delivered most of the lines … meanwhile, James sat back stage drinking bong water and Twittering. Honestly, if I were her I would have tied his dick up until it resembled a balloon animal.

Anyway, you can click the link on top to check out all the techie awards because techies work hard, dammit. They work hard.

The Oscars: Now more boring than ever!

Today it was announced that instead of the usual suspects, The 83rd Annual Academy Awards (taking place on February 27th) are going to be hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway, in an attempt to lure in younger viewers to all the ‘excitement’. I do actually like both of ‘em, they’re great actors, he’s a total cutie and she’s charming but hosting the Oscars?! Please, no! It’s notoriously one of the most boring award shows around (aren’t they all?), I think this is going to be the final nail in the coffin (unless James decides to take it all off or Anne slips a nip!) If producers had tossed in something like the show is only going to be two hours instead of three, then maybe we’d actually have something to look forward to but I can guarantee you that it’s going to be the biggest snooze fest ever, mark my words!

If it’s good enough for “Saturday Night Live,” it’s good enough for … the Academy Awards? That’s the hope, anyway, of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which announced Monday that James Franco and Anne Hathaway will be co-hosting the 83rd Academy Awards. With respective ages of 32 and 28, the two actors are among the youngest hosts for the iconic award show. While both are accomplished, adventurous and well-regarded actors, their primary job qualification for hosting a live variety show is their experience toplining “SNL.”

“We’re not going to require them to perform six to eight skits playing different characters live in front of an audience, but if you can handle ‘Saturday Night Live,’ then that’s a great indication of your readiness as an Oscar host,” says Bruce Cohen, co-producer with Don Mischer of the show, which will air Feb. 27. PS Where’s Jon Stewart when you really need him?!
