NYC against proposition 8 (aka prop hate)

good evening y’all! earlier tonight over in new york city – there was a huge protest & rally against prop 8 which sadly somehow passed here in california last week – i was so elated that barack obama was elected to be our next president but i was so bummed out that people would vote to take away marriage rights for gays (it made me feel bad about myself – and i don’t like to feel that way) we’re not asking for any special treatment – just equal treatment – it’s not harming anyone – it just boggles my mind that the many religious freaks in this country think they can control people – please don’t get me started on any organized religion – it’s all such a big sham – i’ve never been a religious person (raised catholic – something i would never refer to myself as now) all you need to do is be a good person and follow ‘the golden rule’ – do unto others as you would have others do unto you – it’s a pretty simple concept folks!

people were outside the mormon church located on columbus avenue – the church was one of the largest donors behind the campaign of hate! whoopi goldberg even showed up to show her support (i do love her but i wish she still did movies – she’s done some hilarious ones – like jumpin’ jack flash) this coming saturday i’ll be heading downtown to take part in a protest in front of LA’s city hall – apparently there will be protests taking place all over the country! i know in the end we’ll win the right to marry and enjoy equality along with everyone else – even though it’s going to be an uphill battle – we’re totally in this for the long run! popbytes over & out for tonight…xoxo

I do understand what you are upset about, and you have a right to be.
However I feel obligated to point out that the Mormon church DID NOT donate any money to the campaign. Some members of the Mormon church did – however it is an unfair fabrication to claim that the church itself actually put money on the table.

You want everyone to be tolerant, except you won’t be tolerant for those who disagree with you… that is hypocritical, is it not?

    You’re just a spoiled child.
You’re not being deprived of anything.
Quit throwing a tantrum. Grow up.

It isn’t right to put something concerning a minority group to a vote by the majority. It doesn’t affect me if gay people want to marry. I am a religious person but I really do believe that only God can judge, not people.

  • ava

Gays should not be allowed to marry, because marriage is something that was defined by the church whether or not you agree with it and obviously you don’t. I can’t understand why people who are homosexual want to get married, when it is something that is defined to be between a man and a woman. I know a lot of gay people and do not personally have anything against them b/c their lifestyle is not one for me to judge, but I believe what the bible says and cannot understand why people who do not agree or believe in something want something that comes from religion. And like it or not Obama claims to be a Christian and does not believe in gay marriage. This is just my take on the situation.

Thank you for this. For me, the passage of prop 8 (as well as other anti-gay props in other states) put a damper on our historic presidential win. It didn’t make me feel good knowing that so many people would dare to deny so many people the right to marry. There’s nothing wrong with gay marriage, in my opinion, and seeing my friends and family members getting married when it was legal in CA gave me so much happiness and hope for humanity. Now i saw such an ugly side of America during this election…
And kingsblade, of course the church wouldn’t donate money to this prop and have it be publicly available on the books. That’s why they encouraged their members and provided donation forms for prop 8. it’s the same thing if the church donated their own money, but it looks better if they have their members (as well as their church leaders) donate the $$ themselves.

can someone please tell me where in the bible it says that marriage is between one man and one woman? cause i can find where they talk about the amazing King Solomon having multiple wives. . . and i can find things that says if your wife cheats on you, you should gather the men of your city and stone her to death, and many other things that don’t apply now in modern society. anyone who bases their feelings about gay marriage on the bible is mis-using it to shield their bigotry.

Talk to black folks then, the same people who voted Barack in were the overwhelming majority to vote against this.. So you can stop with the “religious freaks” generalizing.
Jon hits the nail on the head when he talks of how you want tolerance yet have not to give. I am ashamed of the behavior I’ve seen from protesters, bullying and berating others is not the way to gain support for the cause.

  • gumball

Hey, it’s silly for same sex to marry and pretend to be husband and wife. Which is a legally married couple. Quit copying something from the norm to make yourself approved.. when no one agrees this is a valid deed, more of a need to force grace and acceptance from the whole. YOu didn’t get it and never will. All this anger and name calling doesn’t help.. You are all like spoiled brats wanting a gun to play with.. Just form a Gay-Les partnership ceremony and let the man and wife have their own marriage laws and rights,., because there is no way.. just no way the world likes this kind of stuff. K?

  • Maggie

For everyone that keeps talking about the Bible and saying that the church started marriage, well thats BULL$#@!
There was marriage BEFORE christianity and BEFORE judaism and before any monotheistic religions. People put a religious spin on marriage but atheists get married in civil marriages all the time. You don’t need a church to marry you. Everyone against gay marriage is really just against homosexuality period. They’re afraid to come out and say it but that’s what it is. It’s just sad how much ignorance there is.

“Talk to black folks then, the same people who voted Barack in were the overwhelming majority to vote against this.. So you can stop with the “religious freaks” generalizing.”
Ok so by stating this, u are generalizing black people, dumba$$…the majority of people who voted for Obama were from all races and backgrounds as well as the ones who voted against Prop 8….

  • Frank

Let’s vote with our wallets. Anybody keeping track of business that are and are not gay friendly? Please let me know. Let’s spend our money wisely.

  • raven

Marriage is beteen a man and woman, and this is how its always been. If you are in a same sex relationship, you should be allowed to give your
pension or social security to whomever is in your life. however, to call it a domestic partnership is acceptable.
