You're not kidding about the small kids not seeing this movie. I'm the same age as this movie, and I remember seeing it when I was little on someone's VCR. I still a little freaked out when I read your post on the movie.

I watched it as a young child, maybe five years old and I was not at all traumatized. In fact, we watched it in first grade and I had already seen it several times.

Didn't Bambi's mother die? And every other Disney character? I found that much more frightening, than an empowering story about the struggle against the tyarrany of a police state. Maybe this is because my mother really did die and I was exposed to history at an early age.
