oprah’s doggie heartbreak :(

oh my gosh i hate posting sad news…oprah winfrey lost one of her golden retrievers named gracie after she choked on a plastic ball that belonged to her older cocker spaniel sophie! oprah adopted three golden retrievers which she introduced as ‘her new family’ on her show back in 2005 – the other two are named luke & layla – all three doggies were featured on the cover of her magazine twice – she opens up about the tragic accident in the upcoming august ’07 issue of Oi ran barefoot out of the house and found the dog walker and one of my security guys pumping her chest. just as i reached them, the security guard looked up and said ‘she’s gone’ oh how sad…gracie was only about two years old!

this story reminded me about my little dog petey who passed away about two and a half years ago after choking on his food – i was devastated and still think about him on a daily basis – he was the best and such a sweet dog! my thoughts & prayers go out to ms. winfrey and please make sure there’s nothing around that your dog could possibly choke on or hurt themselves with – i’m overly paranoid when it comes to my doggies parker & fidel – i simply couldn’t bear losing another one tragically – popbytes over & out for now – xxoo

  • gigi

what kind of stupid ass dog chokes to death on a ball?

  • amanda

Gigi– you are obviously not a dog lover and a heartless human being

  • Kat

i am a dog lover…but dogs definitely do stupid things like this. poor dog.

  • jenjen

Yeah sad. — but I stopped reading after I got to “I ran out to the dog walker…” Barf. These celebs that can’t change their own kids diapers or walk their own damn dogs….Barf.

  • p

What’s wrong with having a dog walker? Lots of people hire them. It’s a perfectly viable option if you are busy. And, no, it’s not the same as raising someone to raise your children.

  • Jen

Hey GiGi, apparently you either have never had a dog or dont pay a damn bit of attention to your own. Golden Retrievers are very appropriately named. All they want to do is retrieve and if you had one or was even the slightest bit knowledgeable you would know that they are constantly carrying around a ball, toy, stick or something in thier mouth. It could have very easily choked on a ball if it was playing with a ball that was too small or perhaps was laying on its back while holding it with two front paws which I have seen numerous dogs do. Mallinformed people just spewing things out of thier mouth without facts only enhances thier ignorance. Further, that was a very heartless thing to say.

  • qtpie

I’m with jenjen, when you get to this part of the story it sounds unreal. most people walk their own dogs. my heart hurts hearing the story, if anything like that was to happen to my baby Coz…:- (

Our Golden, Gaia died last July. It was awful. He was my first dog and I didn’t realize how much it would affect me. My heart ached for so long. I will say a prayer for Oprah. I’m sure Gracie and my Gaia are at Rainbow’s Bridge playing right now.

  • Lyndsey

Aw, my heart goes out to anyone who has lost such an important member of their family. As tragic as this is, Mistakes happen no matter how much you watch them. My sympathies.

I worked @ an Animal hospital for years and seen alot of choking accidents. People just remember that when toys become wore down to throw them out.Raw hyde chews are dangerous for all dogs. Also all kinds of bones, chicken or beef bones splinter and can get stuck down dogs throats, FYI…

  • Cookie

It’s OPRAH’s fault that she let the dog play with that small object! Animal abuse I tell you!

  • Wilby66

Cookie, you’re an ignorant bitch and I’m not referring to the the canine species. May you suffer a loss such as this and when you’re blamed for it may you choke yourself on a small object. Tramp!

  • cooke

Gigi I wish, I hope, I pray that you choke on a ball…..oh never mind you’ll never get close to any dick so how could YOU ever choke on a ball……..

  • Lola

Hey I have a dog walker and I’m not rich or a celebrity. I just don’t like having my dog wait the eight hours to take a walk. Its ten dollars a day – roughly the equivalent of two drinks at starbucks.

  • snuff

I too, have lost a pet and it was a very sad thing for me. But when you have dog walkers, dog whisperers, doggy pooper scoopers, doggy feeders, doggy care givers……how often did “O” actually play and spend time with this pet???? When someone else is doing all the care….how much could SHE really care about the poor animal?

  • Mr Jackola

Oprah has earned all the opportunities that are afforded by her vast wealth. Dogwalkers, Poop Scoopers, A Private Vet/Nutritionist, ect., it doesn’t mean she can’t have feelings of sorrow over the loss of a family pet. Simply put, If a burdensome scenario arises and you have unlimited cash flow, who wouldn’t shell out what amounts to “pocket change” it costs to bypass the toughest and nastiest sides of Pet Ownership? Someone has a cool job at Casa Oprah along with many others “I’m sure” that do other basic household Tasks. What is it that prompts jealous anger when people see wealthy individuals share their earnings with others based solely on the fact that they can’t so there’s something wrong. Look, Oprah’s Dog Walker pays taxes and earns a paycheck, he/she buys things from people Oprah will never know and they in turn take Oprah’s” permanent vacation from ever picking up Dog Poop” money and spend it. Guess what? she probably has a maid and groundskeeping staff…. Successful people understand that time is money and having the big dollars it takes to enjoy passing that wealth through the employment and bettering the life of others is what is correctly labeled “Scoreboard” American style. This whole argument that Oprah is detached from the true emotions of loving her pet by missing some “essential elements ” only “Do it all yourself” Dog owners can understand is idiotic at best. The Dog choked on a ball and things like that happen, sadly they just do. Unfortunate accidents are sad but the misguided ignorance of others who have need to spew inane statements only to find fault and point fingers of responsibility at others finding some twisted and convoluted “self importance” in a sad and painfull situation is pathetic at best …..

As the former parent of a Goldie, I can say that they are one of the sweetest dogs. All of our pets are special! One of those relationships that is always forgiving, nonjudgemental, and unconditional. The wag of a tail when the day was long. A head resting in your lap with those big eyes that seem to say I love you.
We care for families that have suffered loss. There is no difference between the love for a human and the love of a beloved companion.
My heart goes out to Oprah, and anyone who suffers a loss. It is hard to let go.

  • Hazel

My heart goes out to Oprah. I lost my beloved Mandy a year ago and it still hurts. They are part of the family. I now have a new baby who’s name is Sadie. She doesn’t like balls but plays with toys and chews on raw hide bones. I let her do this when I am away because she would be very lonley and bored while I am gone if not for these comforts. Accidents do happen and I pray that it won’t happen to her but its just like having kids, you can not watch them every minute and have to let them experience things to grow up. You pay to have your kids watched by a baby setter so what is so different having a dog walker. These people making those negitive comments are just plain stupid or heartless or have never had a pet or children. You shouldn’t put down things you have no experience with. Again my heart goes out to Oprah. you never really get over the loss of a loved one but you do go on. And I agree they do teach us many valuable lessons. Its a shame but it’s people like Gi Gi and Cookie that make it necessary to have animal shelters.

  • snuff

dog died, end of story. Oprah goes on, we all do. She’ll buy another and make another cover story out of it for her magazine. Touching…..just touching!!!

  • Bob

Have a heart, you soulless monster.

  • sunff

just wait and see…….you KNOW it’ll happen.
And I am not hearless. I, too have lost a pet and it is hard. But like i mentioned earlier, I bet she spent very little time with THIS DOG!!! My heart goes out to those who LOVED this animal…..the ones who cared for it, groomed it, played with it and walked it. THEY are the ones who lost something dear….not the Big “O”

  • Leonor Lozada

Do you think Oprah would like to have an embroidery of her dogs?
I am 80 years old and my hobby is to embroider by hand photos.
If you send me a photo I will embroidery by hand, I can send it to you and you can forwarded to Oprah.
    Thanks
    Leonor

My heart goes out to Oprah for the loss of her Gracie. Our dogs are like our family and to lose a member of our family is very sad. It was tragic to hear how she passed but a lesson for all. Its very sad to read the remarks some have left. They obviously feel no empathy to say such heartless comments. They are also very jealous shallow people. Oprah is a wonderful role model, one of which is her compasion for animals not to mention what she does for mankind.

  • snuff

I am not heartless. My sympathies go out to those who actully CARED for the dog!!! Those who played with it, groomed it, fed it, cared for it, walked it. THEY are the ones who lost a loved one…..not Oprah
