yes it's true! almost 2 weeks before it lands in stores christina aguilera's new album back to basics has been leaked to the internet - i am settling into the double album right now and will be back shortly with my thoughts! woo hoo!

UPDATE MY REVIEW
oh my...not so sure how i feel right now...ok i'm not going to slam back to basics but i will admit right off the bat - i'm disappointed! you could have cut my anticipation with a knife - i had such high expectations and sadly i don't think ms. aguilera delivered like she did on stripped which ironically i picked up today at virgin for $10 bucks! now that is a great album - this second outing after four years is just ok...sorry folks - i have to call it like i hear it!

christina does fufill her intentions/goals and carries her whole 'throw it back' vibe from start to finish but after twenty-two tracks i was done listening to it! i don't think you could put it on repeat - the gimmick seemed to grow old really quick...ain't no other man is hands-down one of the best tracks and was a very smart choice for the first single (it's so my summer '06 song) i also really enjoyed oh mother and still dirrrty...there are some great moments & xtina has a stellar voice but damn girlfriend needs to calm herself down on all the 'yeahs' & 'whoas' - they're practically on every song! disc two is really working the 'back to basics' theme and could be sold as a bonus or used for b-sides! the album just didn't grab me like some other recent listens (like nelly furtado, lily allen, basement jaxx)

i am really curious to hear what other people think of back to basics - it's not terrible by any means and maybe my expectations were set too high (um yeah...i have a reputation for pumping myself up over things) perhaps it will grow on me but as far as albums go they usually either grab me right off the bat or they move on down the line - christina so needs to release oh mother for her next single - an excellent ballad - perfect for radio play! maybe on her third album she should perhaps be a drop less ambitious...but i totally admire her for trying...there is a lot worse than this out right now!

PS i would have loved to share a few tracks here but i know this release is being very protected and it's not worth getting in trouble over plus it'll be in stores two weeks from today (and i'm sure some of you will be able to ferret out the 'leak') oh i wonder what christina's sales will be like? the album should have a strong showing upon the initial drop - i don't see it hanging around like stripped though - which was on the charts for what seemed like an eternity...

I just got the leak early this evening. Ssssshhhh. ;) I'll have to agree...this effort isn't nearly as fun as her previous stuff. It's almost like she tried TOO hard to get this one to sound perfect.

BACK TO BORING!
» this comment was posted by Lola on august 2, 2006 10:54 pm «

I do like the whole vibe that the album has, although I think I can agree with you that Stripped is probably a stronger album.. but Im really enjoying it! Got it last night from a friend and it has some killer tracks on it. Overal reaction is that I like it a lot to listen to - and it's definitely good to work to if you're a freelancer at home, because the volumn needs to go UP!

I agree with you. No doubt X has a great voice, but Ain't No Other Man is the best track and the rest put me to sleep. Nasty Naughty Man was also fun, but this cd definitely wont last on the charts. I just don't think it's what people want to hear right now... yeahhh, woooooah! woah! yeahhhhh!

Kids, I couldn't disagree with you more... Let a girl grow, damn! Yes STRIPPED was a better CD... but she is trying something really tough, this isn't the straight up commercial compilation of producers and club beats we are used to. It's smart of her, it's her Rhythm Nation, her Sign Of The Times. Yes there are some clunkers: Candyman, I Got Trouble, Back in The Day... (We got it xtina, you're going back in time, enough with telling us you are.) BUT songs like Slow Down Baby, Oh Mother, Without You, WELCOME (come on!!!), Save Me From Myself, Hurt, The Right Man, that's some deep shit for a Pop Star to spew. PopMuse LOVES it. PERIOD! Listen more, you'll come around, I have faith.

THE ALBUM IS THE SHIT!!! I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ALL WERE LISTENING TO, BUT CHRISTINA PUT IT DOWN. IT IS GONNA BE HUGE. Y'ALL NEED TO GIVE HER A CHANCE, SHE ROCKED IT OUT. AWESOME.

I have it and it's honestly AMAZING! I love all the songs and its a great CD to listen to. You really have to admire Xtina for dabbling into 20's 30's and 40's genre music and she pulled it off! If she had done another 'stripped' styled album people would be constantly comparing them but 'back to basics' is a totally different album with totally different styles. She could have done a Britney and released a Cd that sounds just like all of her other cds but she didnt. CHristinas voice also seems to be gettting better and better. I had EXTREMLY high expectations and they were met head-on. Great work Christina!

i would love to share the album with the rest of you guys, e-mail me on msn and i will share it.

I have just read your review and thought WHAT?? i LOOOVVEEE the album! its great and just as good as stripped, although i have to agree with Mark's comment, its a whole different genre
» this comment was posted by Mandy on august 6, 2006 11:28 pm «

Well I think it is stunning....given that if she had pared it down to a single album, it would have been classic. Her voice is amazing; the lyrics are cool and controversian as ever; production is awesome. This is classic stuff and I think people will come to view it as her best effort so far. Welcome/Hurt/The Right Man are terrific.

I'm enjoying this album alot more the Stripped. Of course this could be because Stripped was released so long ago, and I have listened to the CD so many times that I have forgotten my excitement when it was released. Quite frankly I am sick to death of my Stripped CD and now that there's FINALLY a new CD it'll probably be years before I ever listen to Stripped again. Honestly though I do think Back to Basics is better. The production alone is just fantastic. I love the full orchestra sound alot of the songs have. I really wish she had not promoted this album as being a "throwback" album. I'm not getting the throwback feel from this CD. To me all of the songs, with the exception of 3 or 4, sound like it could have been on her Stripped CD. I could tell right off the songs Linda Perry did. But whether you love or hate the CD, you have to give Christina major props for at least TRYING to do something a little different. Even if it doesn't work. That's more then what alot of artists are doing right now. And my only negative thing about this CD is I think she oversang alot of the songs. She has a voice that is just so huge and powerful now all she needs to do is learn how to hold it down a little.

I actaully really enjoy this album even though I must admit that I prefer disc 2. I think that Christina took a real chance with this album but made it through. Some of these tracks may not be what the "public" wants but it is a pleasure for the ears if you know music and enjoy it. Her voice has grown stronger and I love how she's stretching her vibes and abilities. I do believe this album should be praised. It was a big difference from "safer" albums like her selftitled and Stripped but she did an incredible job. She also didn't use the "safe" producers but seemed to enjoy working with others this time. I love this album and truly think it deserves credit. My opinion is, you can't even compare this to Stripped. This album is a lot more grown up with strong vocals and deeper lyrics while mixing it up with playful songs which are provocative and flirty. (such as candyman, nasty naughty boy). Good job Christina!!

It is worth the wait... I really disagree with you. I am buying it as soon as it comes out, count me as one of those people who will be in line first thing in the morning next Tuesday! The album is the best, yet. It is hard to have it on detail. Cant wait to have it on my hands for a better sounding quality. My audio set up is ready and waiting to go back to basics!

meh... out of my "good" meter, ten being the highest, i'd give it a four. It was just kinda BLEH, and i ended up only listening to the first few songs... kinda boring...

i must say, the album is fantastic, the lyrics are incredible, more mature, and her vocals are amazing, and guy's don't compare this album with STRIPPED this is much better production. Keep it up Christina you are the BEST.
