 | hey kids - oh its been a wild week - and besides christopher reeve passing away - a true academic legend & genius has passed on as well - world-renowned french philosopher jacques derrida at the age of 74 - considered to be the father of the 'deconstruction' movement - his profound way of thinking affected numerous areas of thought and discipline.
besides having the luck to read some of derrida's musings while doing my masters work (in media studies) at the new school back in nyc - when i first moved to LA - i was luckily afforded the chance to work on a documentary aptly titled DERRIDA - it was my first introduction (and film credit!) to the wacky wild world of los angeles/indie movie-making - and turned out to be one of the best work experiences i ever had - started as the web designer on the project (derridathemovie.com) - i was fortunate enough to work it into a producer's assistant role (post-production mania! but fun!) to co-director & producer Amy Ziering Kofman - helping to work the film's sundance festival 2002 premiere (that place is a hoot!) to the nyc premiere & party with jacques himself in attendance (la premiere too!) - to most recently the film's release on dvd - i still work with Amy (and co-director - kirby dick) today - both amy and kirby have been a blessing - as was working on an important and smart project helping to document the great legacy that jacques has all left us with. |
'The question of the archive is not a question of the past. It is not the question of a concept dealing with the past that might already be at our disposal. An archivable concept of the archive. It is a question of the future, the question of the future itself, the question of a response, of a promise, and of a responsibility for tomorrow. The archive, if we want to know what that will have meant, we will only know in times to come; not tomorrow, but in times to come. Later on, or perhaps never.'
